Acquatic Therapy

What is Aquatic Physical Therapy?

Aquatic Physical Therapy is a great way to relieve physical stress to the body because it uses the weightlessness and natural resistance of the water. This provides the body with additional support to make movements easier and less painful. It also allows for non-weight bearing or limited weight bearing exercise, decreases muscle spasms, increases range of motion and can help improve circulation. Because of these benefits, patients often progress faster towards their rehab goals.

Neurologic & Balance

Balance is a state of body equilibrium or stability. We often take for granted how dependent we are on a healthy balance system. When the system breaks down, however, patients will describe symptoms such as imbalance, dizziness, vertigo, motion sickness, or difficulty getting into and out of bed, walking and driving.

Dizziness, vertigo and other balance disorders are often complex and misunderstood. They can be caused by a number of reasons, including a stroke, car accident or whiplash. We have advanced training and testing methods to accurately assess these problems. We test your balance by evaluating strength, sensory function and safety. We may also assess your flexibility and gait speed, and will do a visual screening. If necessary, we will develop a set of exercises and balance strategies to assist in alleviating your imbalance and reduce your risk of falling. Throughout the process, we work closely with physicians, ENTs, and neurologists to ensure you receive thorough, comprehensive care.

More than two million people per year visit their doctor for balance disorders.

The human body uses three sensory inputs to maintain proper balance. The sensory inputs of touch/feel (feet, ankles, joints), vision (eyes), and vestibular (inner most ear) interact with the brain to drive and control our balance and function. A person with a balance disorder can develop problems in one or more of these input systems.

Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you should discuss the symptoms with your doctor.

Do I feel unsteady?

Do I feel as if the room is “spinning” around me?

Do I feel as if I’m moving when I know I’m standing or sitting still?

Do I lose my balance and fall?

Do I feel as if I might faint? (sometimes people call this “lightheaded”)

Does my vision become blurred?

Do I ever feel disoriented? (loss of sense of time, place, identity)
